August News |
|
It seems that at the start of each months news I say how busy we have been and the endless list of tasks still to do. August has been no exception, and I have to say the busiest of the year so far. It has been the build up to our annual Specialist Plant Fair, with us all running around frantically and forgetting what a day off means.
Since coming back from Hampton Court Sarah has been trying to get the garden weed free and Jill has been concentrating on getting the nursery looking it’s best. Ben has been working all week at Twycross Zoo then coming home at weekends only to do more work here. Dee has also been coming in to help us two days a week to get things in order. On top of this we’ve had one of the busiest August’s ever, so somewhere in the middle of the chaos we’ve had to serve customers too.
All the hard work has paid off, and the Plant Fair was a huge success with over 1200 people attending. There were a few problems with parking and power cuts but we raised over £1000 for charities and everyone, from the stall holders to the public had a great time. We are now breathing a sigh of relief, although we can’t relax for long. Although the nursery will be closing for the winter in just over a month, the autumn is when a lot of our stock plants need to be split and potted so we have fresh stock for spring. The shade bed will all be lifted soon and the woodland plants split and potted. This will be Ben’s task (anyone who knows Ben will know he won’t let anyone touch his precious woodland plants, especially the Polygonatums). A lot of the plants in the Barn Garden are also our stock plants so they will soon be lifted to split, and a reasonable amount of stock re-planted. All the customers who come and ask for plants from the garden and we say we’ve run out until spring, now you know why.
September is also the month when our autumn events kick off. The plant fair was the first of many events held at the nursery, from Sausage and Cider Sunday, to RHS Lectures, to Pottery workshops and herbal courses. See our events page for more details. |
