January News

Welcome to our brand new website. This is the first of our monthly updates we’ll be doing throughout the year, to keep you informed of everything that’s happening at Blacksmiths Cottage.

At the moment we’re braving the cold weather to try and get everything ready for our Hellebore Day in March. We’ve cleared out our front tunnel which was a growing area and converted that into a sales tunnel. We’ve also been creating new beds in The Barn Garden. The new beds are surrounding the barn and we’re hoping to plant them mainly with shrubs. The barn itself is coming along well although there is still quite a bit to do before we can move in to it.

We’ve also been doing work around the site to improve the habitat for our local wildlife. We’ve been putting up nest boxes, providing more food, trimming and layering the hedging plus we have over 200 hornbeam arriving in February to plant. Our House Sparrow project is also doing really well. We have just had the figures for 2007, and out of the seven RAS projects on house sparrows, we are the most successful. To find out more have a look at the Animal section of our website.

It’s not all work though, we are off to Senegal in West Africa for a fortnight at the beginning of February, which will give us a well deserved break. There will hopefully be plenty of birds and animals to keep Ben amused and I’m sure there’ll be a few mosquitoes to welcome Sarah. Once we return it’ll be a couple of weeks before our opening weekend and first event—I have a feeling not all the jobs on the list will be done by then.

Over the winter we have had an addition to the Blacksmiths Team. Our alpaca Cilla gave birth to little Eric in October. He’s already showing signs of being a trouble maker, chasing everything around. As you can see from the picture at the top, it’s quite easy to forgive him. We’ve also brought some alpacas back from our collection in London, so we now have a total of 6 here. Twix, Ginty and Maisy are the additions to join Ivor, Cilla and Eric.
