Sparrow Sunday

Sunday 10th August

10am to 2pm

Free Entry

The first of our themed Sunday’s throughout the year. As part of the wildlife weekend at Blacksmiths Cottage, Sparrow Sunday provides the chance to find out more about these amazing garden birds.

With more than 12 million breeding pairs in 1970 this bird was one of the commonest of all the native birds. However, now there is estimated to be less than 3 million pairs in Britain today. The East has seen the biggest fall, with a 90% decrease since 1970. At Blacksmiths Cottage we run a Rearing And Survival (RAS) project which was established in 2006, and has been one of the most successful in the country.

Sparrow Sunday is a great chance to find out more about what is being done to help one of the nations favourite birds and how you can help. There will be short lectures held throughout about the day at 11am, 12pm and 1pm. Our local BTO bird ringer David Fuller will also be here giving you the opportunity to see the birds being caught and rung and how we monitor the species. If we have chicks in any of our nest boxes on site, there will also be the chance to see the chicks being fitted with the special coloured rings.

The nursery will be open as usual, as will The Potting Shed, which will be serving a range of home-made refreshments throughout the day.

Pair of House Sparrows with coloured rings fitted for monitoring.

FIND OUT MORE

If you would like to find out more about the House Sparrow Project and other animal programmes at Blacksmiths Cottage, then visit the Animals page of the website.

We’ve had to cancel our moth night due to bad weather. Unfortunately wet and windy aren’t the best conditions to catch moths.

We have had such a lot of interest in this event that we will be holding another one. If not by the end of this year it will be added to our 2009 events.
