News - May

May is always a great month for gardening and despite the late Spring, we still had plenty of colourful plants out on the nursery, with some interesting Cardamine and Polygonatum to tempt the lovers of shade plants.

Bungay Street Fayre on May 16th, attracted a bumper crowd of over 15,000 visitors and despite the lack of colour on our stand, we still had good sales, as well as a chance to have a chat with several old friends from Garden Clubs from across the region. At the end of the month we travelled up to the North Norfolk Plant Fair at Creake Abbey and spent an enjoyable, if not damp, day in the company of some of the regions finest nurseries and a dedicated crowd of plantaholics.

The animal collection appreciated the warmer weather, with the first Demoiselle Cranes hatching the 5th May. Japanese Cranes and White Storks started nesting shortly after this and then some of the waterfowl started laying, so fingers crossed for more chicks in June. May also brought sad news with the death of our female Red Squirrel. We hope to receive a new female squirrel from Draton Manor Park in the Midlands later in the year as part of the UK breeding programme.

On the 20th May we attended the opening of Himalaya at Twycross Zoo. The planting of the exhibit is finally starting to grow and I am indebted to Bleddyn and Sue Wynn-Jones of Crug Farm Plants for advice on suitable plants and also the quality of the bare rooted trees and shrubs that they supplied for this project.

June promises to be an interesting month with plenty of colour in the garden, an impresive range of Iris sibirica and Astrantia flowering on the nursery alongside some obscurities such as Apios americana.
